This year, Alma Kwekery is bringing back Open Gardens – made possible by the generous homeowners opening their gates and sharing their gardens with us. With spring in full bloom, each garden has its own character, from its layout and planting to the little details that make it feel like home. Come for inspiration, come for a day out, or simply come for the roses!
Never been? Here’s how it works
- Entry is free. Just arrive any time during the opening hours and wander at your own pace.
- Addresses are shared and circulated via WhatsApp the week before the event. Contact us if you have any questions +27 79 090 2106
- Snacks & drinks are for sale at some of the gardens. The money goes to local causes, including the Hennenman retirement home. Cash only.
- Please remember that it’s a private home. Please respect the owners’ gardens, keep children close. No pets are allowed.

The gardens
Garden 1: Tania & Fanie Rossouw – a farm garden outside Allanridge

New to Open Gardens this year – and Tania welcomes visitors from early in the morning when she says the garden is at its best! We visited recently and can’t wait for more people to see it: sprawling lawns, big trees and plenty of birdlife. The roses are the real stars with standard roses lining where you walk and drive and climbers creating beautiful focal points. There’s plenty of birdlife to enjoy too!
Garden 2: Lochner Bremer – Hennenman

People came from far and wide to see this garden last time, and it’s easy to see why. The sandstone house sits at its heart, surrounded by lush lawns, roses, citrus trees and tall cypresses. Tucked-away corners under white umbrellas are made for sitting down with a cup of tea. Tea and sweet treats are served in aid of the Hennenman retirement village, so please come hungry.
Garden 3: John & Elize Donovan – Jim Fouchépark, Welkom

A Cape Dutch homestead with white roses climbing its pillars, under the shade of big, well-established trees. A newly renovated section brings smart, modern architecture into the mix: a mint-green cottage under a weeping willow, a long pool, and playful sculptures which has been worked beautifully into the older garden.

Good to know before you go
- Wear comfortable walking shoes. Some gardens have uneven paths, slopes or steps.
- No pets are allowed at any of the gardens.
- Bad weather? Check our Facebook and Instagram pages on the morning. If the weather turns really bad, we’ll reschedule and post the new date there.
